Might & Magic: Chess Royale hopes to take advantage of the rise in popularity of both the auto-battler and battle royale formats. Available in both desktop and mobile formats, the game functions primarily like an auto-battler, but each game consists of 100 players, and the last man standing is declared the victor. Despite the name and the board shape, Chess Royale has virtually nothing in common with traditional chess.

Leaning heavily on the Might & Magic franchise to provide a little extra validity in a genre dominated by Blizzard, Valve, and Riot’s fantasy efforts, Chess Royale places a relatively unambitious autobattler into the vaguest-possible battle royale framework, encouraging 100 players to fight it out for the top spot. It’s an amusing gimmick to add to a new genre, but it does little to change the way players interact with one another—when all the other Auto Chess-inspired games are already last-player-standing affairs, bolting the word ‘royale’ to the end of your title isn’t exactly revolutionary, especially when there isn’t a battle bus or blue circle in sight.

While this isn’t a direct spinoff of Ubisoft’s Might & Magic Heroes strategy games, fans of those games will recognize many of the units. One of the big goals is to create relatively short matches. Ubisoft claims that you can “lose quick” or “win quick” with game sessions that last 10 minutes. That could help distinguish it from the auto battler crowd. Dota Underlords and Teamfight Tactics can have 30-minute matches or longer.

Where this game shines, however, is in its simple to learn moves and controls; within a single battle we had worked out what to do, what works well and what doesn't, and how to best play each battle. You start with no units and four coins, and you can spend these coins on troops from the starting shop. The first fight will always be the riskiest; having a randomised shop can go one of two ways and you will be hoping that it favours you as this initial fight can determine the outcome of the rest of your game. Of course, there is the option to refresh the store, giving you the chance to get some better troops, however, this costs a gold piece and early on when gold is scarce you will want to optimise your purchases to improve your team as much as possible. When it comes to buying your troops there are a few features you will have to consider; the most expensive troop is not always the best and playing based on synergies can more often than not work out better than having a full team of super-powerful troops. It all depends on the style of play you are hoping to achieve and whether or not you can make this work with the troops you have available to you.

Chess Royale's unique offering, aside from the 100-player game format, is the addition of spells. There are six spells available in a game that is randomized daily. These spells fall into three tiers, and each tier is unlocked after a certain number of players have been eliminated. Once a spell is purchased, it remains in effect for five rounds of combat. Purchasing another copy of the same spell refreshes the duration and increases the effect. Spells seem to have an impact (in theory) on the standard meta game, keeping things fresh from day to day. For example, one spell reduces all healing for both allies and enemies, which lowers the value of any healing strategies for the day.
