Super Meat Boy Forever is an endless runner. Yeah, I missed the memo on that one—because I was expecting more Meat Boy. Full disclosure: I’m not really a fan of endless runners. Though Super Meat Boy Forever has quickly become my favorite example of this platforming subgenre, I feel like I would have preferred a more traditional platformer. Yet, it seems like most environments have certain set-pieces that will appear every time through a level, while other portions of a stage’s layout are generated a bit more randomly. The problem was, this hybridized approach to creating a level’s geometry — where only part of each layout was hand-curated — led to an extremely uneven experience when it came to gameplay, challenge, and polish. Additionally, this led to large portions of each map feeling like filler, instead of the pure, concentrated challenge that has been previously enjoyed.

Super Meat Boy Forever was conceived as a smartphone-friendly version of the original, but over time it evolved into a sequel. This time, Meat Boy (or Bandage Girl, the damsel elevated to a player character) moves under their own unstoppable momentum, and our job is to jump and dash at the right time. The levels are now randomly generated, with enemies and layouts that remix themselves every time you start a new game. In theory this makes it infinitely replayable, a fount of continual, unpredictable challenge – but it loses so much in the transition that I didn’t feel like returning to it.

One of the reasons people adore Super Meat Boy is for its airtight controls. Reforging that functionality, scaling back the precision, seemed like an odd choice at best and a disastrous one at worst. Fortunately, Forever is far from a calamity. A lot of the glee found in the original—the white-knuckle chaos of a platformer that moves so fast that you're forced to rely on your primal instincts rather than your deductive acumen—is replicated in the sequel. Those moments where everything clicks, and you finally pass through a helter-skelter trial unscathed, remain profoundly sublime. Team Meat has also generated enough wrinkles to keep the auto-running blueprint from growing too staid. One world introduces a belligerent purple beam of light that, when defeated, briefly infuses Meat Boy with the ability to blast through certain barriers.

The one area where Super Meat Boy Forever has upped its game is the animated segments that punctuate gameplay. The new emphasis on narrative comes as Meat Boy and Bandage Girl head out on the hunt for Dr. Fetus, who has kidnapped their child, Nugget. The story of what happens next is equal parts odd and endearing. It certainly isn’t going to be up for a Pulitzer, but charming presentation and insane characters help to ensure that the action isn’t being taken too seriously. I mean, how serious can it be when you’re a bloody side of uncooked beef, fighting against a fetus in a jar, who also just so happens to have a doctorate?
